Sorry, I’ve been behind on things, so I haven’t gotten back to you yet. OK, here we go. BTW, I’m constantly imprressed with your thoroughness.

1) If the bed were positioned with its head under the center, how about
capping the roof with a
circular skylight? About 4 ft. diameter should give you a decent view of
the stars, and the moon would
illuminate it too. (A cylinder actually helps with the framing of
something like this — otherwise all your
framing are trying to crowd in together!)

I don’t think I would put my bed in the center of the room - it’s too limiting to plan for one place. It would most likely be aginat the south part of the wall. A skylight sounds like it would add beaucoup dinero to the cost. I’m thinking that I can see the stars from the window and also from going out on the terrace.

2) If we did something like this, the cylinder (or maybe “silo” would be more colorful?) could also help ventilation by being

a draw for outgoing air, like a chimney. In addition,
the vertical walls below the skylight could have colored glass
that would let some interesting light fall on the walls and floor.
It could even be turned into a sun-tracking instrument of some kind!

No, I’m probably not going to be doing any permanent decorative designs like that. I will probably just put things that I already have have (furniture and art-wise) in my house and let the other decorations fall around them. Remember, I like the house to design itself. Plus, I don’t think I can afford to do something like that.

Also, I talked to Randy about your idea for a circular stairway and he said it could be quite expensive. If we can get away with not doing that and having a straight stairway, I’d prefer to do that.

I’m more of a functional person when it comes to the house, so I will probably not be doing much in the way of decorative touches. I’m more concerned with what the house does than how it looks. So as long as I have my round library, my courtyard looking through the west side to the mountains and a second level bedroom so I can have a spectacular view of the mountains, and a kitchen/great room that is integrated and intimate so that’s where everyone will congregate - I’m good. I know for a fact that no matter what gets designed, it’s not going to look exactly like I have in my head, and that’s ok with me. It’ll be more fun to make the house mine when I move in if some things are somewhat of a surprise.

Also, some things - like the 2nd and 3rd bedroom and the guest bath, are not things that I care much at all about. In my opinion, they are there just so I can have guests over. Details in those rooms can be sacrificed for the things I do care about.

3) For the laundry, do you want to dry clothes outdoors — any kind of
rack or clotheslilne?

Maybe on the upper deck south of the bedroom.

4) What kind of bathing do you want to be able to do upstairs? — tub,
shower, both together,
both separate? Any other specifics come to mind about a bathroom?

I wanted to have a whirltubbath and shower up there, but I think I like your idea better about having a hottub on the upstairs deck. So just a tile tub and shower is good, something simple. I just want the full bath for resale value if I happen to sell.

5) Back to the main space….any interest in
exposed framing of some kind,
such as small poles?

Since we’re doing steel frames, I don’t think that would be that attractive. Plus, that forces a decorative design. If anything, slotted windows (long narrow ones) might be more interesting.

6) Also, do you want it to be free of posts, or would you be interested in some interesting central core that would also be structural? This issue of course affects the library as well.

I’d like posts in the courtyard and on any porches. I like that look and always have. Having posts on the inside restrains what I can do with decorations.

7) I’ve got an idea for roof terrace also; just need a little drawing time!

It’s been raining ALOT down there. Tucson got hit with several incidents of 2 inches of rainfall in less than a month.
